Turkey Cabbage Skillet

Turkey cabbage skillet is a delicious, easy, and healthy meal.

Over the years, I have come to use cabbage more and more in my recipes. Years ago, I thought cabbage meant coleslaw. We love coleslaw; it’s a perfect lunch or easy dinner alongside a turkey burger or tuna melt.

But this versatile veggie is wonderful sautéed, roasted, in a wrap, or part of an egg roll bowl. A large head of cabbage goes a long way. I can get several servings of coleslaw, plus a couple of dinners from a single head. This is particularly helpful given the price of groceries these days.

Elements

Olive Oil: Used to sauté the turkey.

Ground Turkey: I use lean ground turkey.

Salt & Black Pepper: Used to enhance and bring out the flavor.

Onion: I usually use red onion as that is what we usually have on hand. Yellow or white onion would also be great.

Garlic: Adds great flavor.

Tomato Paste: Adds intense tomato flavor and pleasing color to the dish.

Worcestershire Sauce & Soy Sauce: Both add savory flavor.

Diced Tomato: The tomatoes, along with the juice, provide flavor. The cabbage cooks in the tomato juice, absorbing flavor. A big, juicy tomato would also work.

Cabbage: This recipe uses half of a small head of cabbage.

Mozzarella cheese: A little cheesy goodness melted over the top is always a great finishing touch.

Preparation

Start by adding your ground turkey to a heated skillet drizzled with olive oil. I use a non-stick skillet. Break up the meat into small pieces while it cooks. I keep seeing people use those meat mashers in cooking videos. They seem to work great. Or, be like me and mash away with your spatula. 🙂

Once the meat is cooked and properly mashed, add the onion and cook until softened. Then add garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Cook and stir for another minute.

Add the tomatoes and the cabbage. It will seem like a big heap of cabbage, but it really cooks down. Cook and stir until the cabbage is cooked down and tender.

Sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese and cook until melted. Covering the skillet will speed this process.

Serve immediately.
