Egg roll in a bowl is a healthy, delicious spin on this Asian favorite. Who can resist an egg roll at a Chinese restaurant?
I love egg rolls and the idea of all those wonderful ingredients deconstructed and combined in a bowl sounded so good. I can have it ready in under a half hour, and you can’t have too many quick, easy recipes.
Ingredients
Sesame Oil: Sesame oil is often food in Chinese cuisine and flavors the ground turkey.
Ground Turkey: I used lean ground turkey in the recipe. You could use any ground meat you like.
Fresh Garlic & Ginger: Adds bright, fresh flavor.
Cabbage: Versatile and healthy cabbage is a primary filler in egg rolls. I love the crunch it adds to so many recipes including chicken chow mein.
Soy Sauce: The base of the sauce.
Sriracha: We like heat, so I added a dollop of sriracha. This could easily be omitted.
Sweet Chili Sauce: Sweet chili sauce reminds me of the dipping sauce that often comes with egg rolls. It is sticky, sweet, and a little spicy and I love the flavor.
Chow Mein Noodles or Steamed Rice: Either makes a nice accompaniment to the egg roll bowl. Crunchy chow mein noodles are my preference. The noodles mimic the crunch of an egg roll. Hubby also recently tried it with wonton strips over the top.
Green Onions & Sesame Seeds: Finishing touches to the egg roll bowl.
Instructions
If you serve your bowl with rice, you will want to start cooking the rice.
Start by browning the ground turkey. Break up the turkey into small pieces as it cooks. Add the garlic, ginger, and cabbage once the turkey is nearly cooked.
Once the cabbage has softened but still has some crunch, add the soy sauce, sriracha, and sweet chili sauce. Stir to combine.
Add rice or chow mein noodles to your bowl and pile in the egg roll mixture. Add green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. I like to serve in a pasta bowl with roasted broccoli.
Enjoy!
