I think my favorite (heavy sarcasm) part of this article is the idea of a war on protein. War on protein? Listen to any dietitian, nutritional expert, or social media influencer, and you will hear about the virtues of getting enough protein in your diet. Walk through the grocery store and read labels, all about protein! The emphasis on whole foods and limiting ultra-processed food is fine. Most people know that. But it assumes everyone has access to and resources for fresh food, which seems to get more expensive all the time.
I personally find the push on animal protein off-putting. While I am certainly no vegan, I do limit my animal proteins. More animal protein often means more saturated fats, which have been consistently proven to increase the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. The guidelines also push the narrative that carbohydrates are the enemy of a healthy diet. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy and provide fiber and essential nutrients.
I am hardly a nutrition expert, but I know what I believe and what works for me. People have been ignoring government dietary recommendations since the government began issuing them. Luckily, we are free to do so.
The actions of Homeland Security and ICE are far more disturbing. My home state has seen the killing of an unarmed woman. Unqualified people giving angry men weapons and power.
In my privileged corner of life, I am baking a carrot cake to bring to dinner with friends. (We are eating carbs and sugar, don’t tell RFK Jr.) The cake was made the day before I frosted it, so plenty of time to cool. I think cake tastes better the next day.
I am also looking forward to a weekend of playoff football.
Finally, on a lighter note. The thoughts we all have at the gynecologist’s office made me laugh out loud
Have a peaceful weekend.
