French Toast

Enjoy a cozy, comforting breakfast with French toast. It’s easy to make with simple ingredients.

We usually have a savory weekend breakfast like frittata or a casserole. A sweet, indulgent breakfast like French toast is a fun change of pace. We also love pancakes, especially this pumpkin version.

Elements

Egg: Gives the batter richness and helps bind the ingredients.

Milk: You can use any type of milk you have on hand. I happened to have skim milk and half & half to use up the last time I made this recipe.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds color, cozy warmth, and aroma.

Vanilla Extract: Adds depth of flavor.

Bread: French bread is a great choice. I have used basic sandwich bread as well. Cinnamon raisin bread adds a nice twist. Don’t worry about having fresh bread available. Day-old bread is perfect!

Butter: Used to cook the French toast. You could use cooking spray, but I recommend butter.

Preparation

Start by slicing your bread. I sliced the French bread about 1 inch thick. Make your slices uniform in thickness so they cook at the same rate.

Preheat your skillet or griddle and melt the butter. I used a crepe pan, which worked very well. No, I have never made crepes! I should try them. 😉

Whisk together the egg, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Dip a piece of bread in the mixture. Turn the bread over in the batter to completely coat. Transfer to the heated skillet. Repeat with additional bread. I was able to get four slices of bread on my pan.

Allow the bread to cook undisturbed for five minutes. Take a peek with a spatula to see if the bread is golden brown. If so, flip and allow to cook another 5 minutes. You might need to add a little more butter to your skillet when you cook the remaining slices of French toast.

Serve immediately with maple syrup and/or butter if desired. I served with some precooked turkey sausage and fruit to round out our breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk *see note
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 thick slices of bread I like French bread
  • 1 Tbsp butter divided

Instructions

  • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add butter and allow it to melt. Swirl the melted butter to coat the skillet.
  • Whisk egg and milk in a shallow bowl large enough to dip the bread. Add cinnamon and vanilla and mix again.
  • Dip bread in egg/milk mixture. Turn the bread over and make sure the bread has been completely submerged in the mixture. Transfer to skillet and fry until golden on both sides; about 5 minutes per side depending on the thickness of the bread. Repeat with remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
  • Serve warm with butter and/or maple syrup.

Notes

You can use any type of milk you have available. I used skim milk along with about a quarter cup of half & half.
